PASSENGER CARS

Railroad Collectibles maintains an inventory of scale dimensioned passenger cars available in sets or individually.  Our offerings include production or “as built” by the factory and upgraded and detailed versions. The short production runs of some factory built cars limit their availability.  Some cars are built or modified on request to represent specific prototypes not offered or no longer available.  For the most part these cars are set up for 3-rail operation, but most are readily convertible to 2-rail trucks and couplers.

Listed below are the cars currently available, all custom unless otherwise noted and often in single sets only.  [Click on underlined items to view photos; use browser back button to return.]

Williams scale dimensioned cars were offered in various forms over the years, but currently only the 70” scale heavyweights are in production.  Since these are available on short order, we do not generally stock them but we can often find these cars. The current 70’ scale cars include baggage, RPO, coach, diner, Pullman , and observation.  Window upgrades make them more realistic as well as the addition of diaphragms which they do not supply.

In past years, Williams made a longer, almost 80’ version of a similar car in a 5-car set in several road names with very toy-like colored window inserts.  Without those inserts, these cars are a good starting point for custom coaches, parlors, and observations.  No RPO or diner was produced.  We have some individual cars in this configuration.  Call for availability.

For a very limited period of time Williams produced scale 80’ extruded Budd-style aluminum streamlined passenger cars in 6 car sets.  The car types included full baggage, baggage coach, coach, diner, dome coach and dome observation. These cars lend themselves to upgrading and re-lettering and are reasonable replicas of the prototype.  The dome observation though had limited prototype application.  We have few sets in the Amtrak scheme, and several others in custom sets.

Although now out of production completely, K-Line passenger cars were available until recently in both heavyweight 72’ and lightweight 85’ configurations.  The heavyweights had been made many years and were sold originally with black and white silhouettes, later upgraded, and finally with full interiors.  Many road names were offered, not all of them accurate.  6 car types were: full baggage, RPO, coach, diner, Pullman , observation. We have some individual cars and sets in stock, both as built and modified.

The latter were produced in both polished stainless steel and smoothside painted versions.  Several prototype variations with full interiors and overhead lighting made these some of the nicest out of the box cars produced for the money when they were available. We have some original sets, some individual cars, and some modified cars in stock.  These are very desirable and difficult to find.  We have several road names in both as built and custom versions.

For several years Weaver has produced 80’ LW passenger cars in both ribbed and smoothside variations.  A production change some years ago was made in the car overall design and the truck sideframes.  The later cars have a more prototype appearance, although both types are all metal.  Earlier cars have silhouettes and the later ones dark green glazing. They are all lighted. We have some of these cars in both production and modified variations.

In addition Weaver has produced a line of full scale 85’Pullman-Bradley  cars built for several railroads during the transition from heavyweight to lightweight cars.  These cars have a lower profile, rounded roof and large windows. We have some in stock, both production and custom painted.

MTH has produced both heavyweight and lightweight passenger cars for several years in 5 car sets with some add-ons. The 5 car sets included baggage, 3 coaches, observation.  Add-ons RPO and diner.  The heavyweights have always been plastic bodies with metal frames and, with the exception of 1 80’set of Santa Fe cars, 70’ scale length.  The lightweight cars were originally aluminum but later changed to plastic bodies, both ribbed and smoothside, a few years ago. These are also 70’ scale cars. The 5 car set includes baggage, 3 coaches, observation.  Add-ons sleeper and diner. We have production and some custom versions including add-on sets.

In recent years Lionel has produced a series of highly detailed heavyweight and now lightweight passenger cars.  These cars are scale proportioned, but like others, some individual cars are a little shorter than full scale. We have used these cars individually and in sets to build custom detailed trainsets.  From time to time sets and individual cars are available.
